just for the taste of it…???

For 2010, I have sworn off french fries (so far so good), swearing (um, need some help here), artificial sweetener (using raw sugar instead), and… carbonated soft drinks.  Or, ’sparkling non-alcoholic beverages’, as Coca Cola now calls them.

I’m reconsidering my no-pop resolution though, because both Coke and Pepsi are trying to make the world and my life in the world better.  Why shouldn’t I support them?

Pepsi has the Refresh Project, www.refresheverything.com  They are giving away millions of dollars in grants to fund our great ideas!  (Wonder if they’re like the typical VC and will end up taking 90% of the value — probably not).  There are some good ideas so far on their site.  I applaud them.  This falls in with micro-loans and all of the other entrepreneurial stimulation that is bubbling up under the recession.

And Coke is doing its part, too.  First, Coke is telling me to “open happiness”.  (That’d be a bonus envelope or a tax refund check… or maybe a report card with straight A’s from one of my kids).  They back it up with their Live Positively “community center”, www.livepositively.com… as well as their “Expedition 206″ (www.expedition206.com) – - happiness ambassadors visiting 206 countries to see what makes people around the world happy!  (By the way, for a more authentic happiness effort, check out Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project – - www.happiness-project.com)

If soda pop can fulfill my entrepreneurial dreams and also make me happy, Then maybe I should cut them some slack.

I dunno – I am suspicious about their efforts.  I think they just want me to drink up.  Smile optional!

There has to be a more authentic way to market soft drinks….
